Elements and blanks

There are 118 elements plus around 50 blank spaces.

Each will be 18 x 22 cm in size, approximately, (don’t worry too much +/- 1 cm) and a grid as the basis of the pattern sent out (attached)

The grid is generated from a picture and so is in white, black and shades of grey.  The white should be one colour, the black a contrast, but some artistic licence applies to the shades of grey!    Plan it out before you start.

You may also want to block out the border of 4 rows/stitches on the pattern as a reminder before you start.

Knitting instructions

Needles: Size 7-9 (UK, around 4mm)

Yarn: double knitting washable yarn is ideal, with two contrasting colours needed for each element.   Use up your spare wool!   We are not fussy about the colours, except that they should contrast.

Each (large) pattern is 38 stitches and 64 rows.

We ask that the first and last 4 rows and the first and last 4 stitches in the rows be a border either in garter knit (plain knitting), with the rest as normal stocking stitch (plain / purl)

Thus:  cast on 38 stitches

Rows 1-4:  knit 38

Rows 5-59 (odd rows):  knit 4, purl 30, knit 4

Rows 6-60 (even rows): knit 38

Rows 61-64:  knit 38 then cast off 38.   Leave your threads to help with sewing.

The pattern – use as guidance with the black squares providing the definition for each element.  There are grey squares which we leave you do decide what works best.   Watch out that you have the letters the correct way round!

Keep the back neat by crossing the second colour over each stitch – or use duplicate or intarsia knitting if that is easier.

If you can block out your finished pattern that would be really appreciated but is not essential.
